Episode 1: The email list you forgot you were on

Allow me to reintroduce myself

Remember when I gave you that free Lightroom preset for your cell phone pictures? Or when I took photos at your friend’s wedding? Or maybe even more likely, we’ve probably been Facebook friends for a decade or more.

Whether we go way back or we just met, I'm glad you're here! Let's cover the basics right out of the gate:

  • I only send emails when I have something to say. My goal is once a month, but it's almost always less frequent than that.
  • You can expect content about creating TikTok effects, recent strategic projects, and other creative endeavors. If you're unfamiliar with brand strategy or using TikTok and Instagram effects to promote a brand, band, or event, could you please reply and let me know what you'd like to learn about that?
  • My goal is to add value to you. I'm on some email lists where I automatically delete messages the second I receive them, and I hope that you and I can keep the conversation open between us so that these messages hold their value to you.
  • I use this space to share resources I'm finding useful that I think you'd like, too, but don't be surprised if it ends up being mostly about bagels.

I’m retiring as a photographer

Also, in the spirit of reintroducing myself, here are some quick facts about me:

  1. I live in northern New Jersey with my wife, two young kids, and our indestructible dog, Pepper.
  2. I like to think of myself as an insatiable creative. I genuinely just enjoy making things, but it's never enough!
  3. Despite the bright green hair, I'm super introverted and get physically exhausted after almost any social outing.
  4. Some prior work experience, either as employee or as a contributor, includes Google, Squarespace, and Blockbuster (may it rest in power).
  5. I love listening to music. Can you please send me what you're listening to lately? I'm accepting recommendations in every genre!

Final thought: let's connect on Twitter, TikTok, or Instagram so that I can learn a little more about you!

Talk soon,
Dan

Instagram filters are dead. Well, they will be soon, anyway. Yes, Meta is sunsetting its third-party effects creation tool, Spark, in just over a week. That, coupled with the credible threat of a TikTok ban in the US could put an abrupt halt to this subjectively brief but objectively entertaining filter creation path I've been on for the past few years. So, as is trendy around this time of year, I wanted to look back on some of the weirdest ones I've built for Instagram and Facebook. Bearded...

The year is 1996. I'm stepping up to the plate in my t-ball game, and in just a few months, Bugs Bunny would pull Michael Jordan into the Looney Tunes universe with the premiere of Space Jam. Even though my career in baseball went about as well as Michael’s, I distinctly recall Space Jam being a pivotal moment that blurred the lines between my reality and what I watched on tv. Daffy Duck and Patrick Ewing on the same screen? My 7-year-old brain wasn’t ready for that. So 28 years later, when I...

Photo of Calvero

I haven’t met too many people who are truly complacent in life. We’re well beyond the days where you can settle into a career right out of college and retire a few decades later with a pension. So we need to rely on creativity and opportunity to meet our needs. This month, I wanted to shine a light on the unconventional world of Calvero, an independent musician who is making waves in the art of creative promotion. We’ll explore how Calvero leverages his ability to spark curiosity (often...
